CPAW NJ May Pawsitive Mews

NJ Cat Rescue

NJ cat rescue

In the last five weeks volunteers, caregivers, and supporters felt joy and a sense of a job well

done as we went about the business of saving lives thru trap, neuter, vaccinate, return (TNVR).

And we had lots of fun along the way —

  • Meeting and training new volunteers at the AdvoCAT workshop at Mundo Vegan
  • Helping Brookdale Pet Center customers with Cat Behavior 101 (and talking outdoor cats!)
  • Trapping cats and saving lives
  • Meeting new friends at the Walnut Street Fair
  • Talking with caregivers about how to do TNVR
  • Hosting the PFA Spay Van at our local Acme parking lot to bring low-cost medical care to our area
  • Attending the Animal Protection League of NJ annual tricky tray as one of two (Capic Cats was the other lucky group) groups to receive the pet food donations

For us here at CPAW NJ, what makes us happiest is teaching folks we meet so they can carry on the mission, whether it is as a caregiver, a concerned neighbor, a donor, or even in the conversation at a cocktail party. Knowledge is indeed power!

P.S. Early happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there (both human and animal)!

Co-founder Karen Shinevar representing CPAW NJ at the annual Animal Protection League of NJ fundraiser…we received half of the pet food donations which will be shared with the Montclair Human Needs Food Pantry to support our surrender prevention project.

Can you donate a can of cat food?

We will also be collecting cans of cat food that will be donated to The Human Needs Food Pantry for their surrender prevention program as well as to The Cat Rescuers to help them with feeding their outdoor colonies. Any donation is pawsome! Information about how we can help cats right here in our own backyard will be available from CPAW NJ volunteers. Register at https://cpawnj.org/events/ and click on “The Cat Rescuers” screening.

Nevaeh, our latest “miracle” kitten, gets stronger by the day.  Now with one healthy eye, she plays and avoids her meds and fights her smelly baths to get rid of ringworm.  In another month the vet believes she will be strong enough to have her damaged eye removed and be spayed.  Foster mom Yvette tells her of the day she’ll be able to play with other cats after testing negative for ringworm and other parasites.

You can read all about her story at https://nevaehsjourney.tumblr.com.

Nevaeh is so incredibly grateful for your support! Please know that any donation, no matter how small, greatly impacts our ability to help cats like Nevaeh. It costs us about $20 per week to feed and care for a cat like Nevaeh.

Can you help for a week?

PLEASE DONATE or VOLUNTEER if you can.

Those needing help is greater than ever … so our focus has been on promoting our monthly spay/neuter van initiative and building our volunteer base so that we can do more trapping. Resources are key: outdoor cat caregivers getting cats on a regular feeding schedule so food can be withheld for trapping, trappers, transporters, spaces at low-cost clinics or vets for the spay/neuter, recovery space and volunteer time, and transport for release.

APRIL RESULTS

SPAY/NEUTER:  11 companion animals (or kittens rescued) were spayed/neutered this month, along with 33 cats released through Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return (TNVR).

The monthly spay van at pawtner Acme Markets on Valley Road, Upper Montclair, was a resounding success! 17 cats now have shots and will live longer healthier lives. Thanks to Gail for volunteering, Kathy for bringing her four foster kittens, and Izzy who helped get everyone checked in and checked out.

We are grateful for our pawtners Acme Markets and People for Animals for the opportunity the last Tuesday of every month to bring this low-cost medical care to area residents.

Thanks to those who donated in April!  We are an all-volunteer organization that relies on your generous support.

If you’ve never donated before, how about a $5 a month donation?  That’s $60 a year and would spay/neuter one community cat!

If you can make a bigger impact, how about a one-time donation of $100, which would allow us to help someone get their pet spayed when they can’t afford it themselves?

And if you want to help us create a voucher program for the monthly spay van, how about a $550 donation to help us defray the costs of 10 tnvr cats at one of the spay vans?  Many folks feed and can learn to trap but can’t afford the spay costs.
