CPAW NJ February 2020 Pawsitive Mews

NJ Cat Rescue

Spay It Forward 2020 | February PAWSITIVE MEWS

In this issue, learn about an upcoming FUN volunteer party!, the Associated Humane Societies’ grant from Essex County, and of course our news of the month’s activities. Plus  MORE good mews:  Oreo’s adoption! and a story of hope and love about an outdoor cat living the life with his loving caregivers.  We hope you have a wonderful February!

From the desk of Karen Shinevar, CPAW NJ co-founder and community cat advocate:

Lately I’ve been thinking that it’s almost a miracle every time a cat is TNR’d.  First you have to FIND the cat, then get it on a regular feeding schedule, then make plans to trap, hold, transport, have an APPOINTMENT, transport, recover, and return.

WHEW!  And sometimes it takes several times to get one cat….and a lot of cooperation by the caregiver and the volunteers/service providers along the way.  Like this month the folks at People for Animals helped us with a sick older female.  She needed fluids and some antibiotic treatment for a week before she could be spayed….still recovering.  Thanks so much PFA!  WE LOVE YOU!

That’s why we always say….it takes a village.  So we want to celebrate all caregivers, volunteers, and supporters with a FUN VOLUNTEER NIGHT!  Thanks to the Bloomfield Animal Shelter for opening its doors on Thursday, February 13 from 7 – 9 pm.  We’ll have a warm meal and one of our talented volunteers, Cheryl, will help us make “Wish dolls”.  They are therapeutic to make and a delight to look at…Look at this picture to see the finished result.

HOPE TO SEE YOU ON Thursday, February 13,

Bloomfield Animal Shelter, 61 Bukowski Place, Bloomfield 7-9 pm.

Meet your fellow volunteers and we’ll break some bread together.

ESSEX COUNTY FREEHOLDERS

SPAY IT FORWARD!

Announcing:  Pilot Essex County TNR Subsidy Program

Advocacy efforts at the County level finally got 4 paws up!!!

Associated Humane Societies, in conjunction with a grant from the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, will offer free spay/neuter and rabies/distemper vaccines for Essex County outdoor cats in a trap, neuter, vaccinate and return program at its mobile unit on surgery days.  The program will be available through April 30, 2020, or until allocated funds are depleted.

Mandatory eligibility requirements include the following:

  • Cats must be both trapped AND returned to the same Essex County address.
  • Persons presenting cats to AHS must verify Essex County address for trapping and return.
  • Cats must be in traps.  No carriers allowed.

  • All cats will be eartipped, no exceptions.

  • Any extra services, including nail trim, testing, antibiotics, etc. will be charged to the person at the published price.

Appointments must be made ahead of time by calling Debbie at 973-824-7080, Ext. 118.  The dates and locations of the AHS mobile spay van can be found at https://www.ahscares.org/ContentPage/2877.

Good mews!  CPAW NJ has already secured 1 AHS van to come to the Bloomfield Animal Shelter and hopes to have another one in our area in Essex County. We will be handling the registration for these van(s) and working to have 15 feral cats each time so that we can maximize the use of these very scarce resources. Contact us by email at cpawnj@gmail.com

We are thrilled that the County has created this pilot funding program.  Now we all need to work together to fill in all of the other pieces needed to help fix an outdoor cat….finding, trapping, transport, recovery and release to responsible caregiver.

Our February HERO IN ACTION is Jen Chaky!

Jen is an extraordinary volunteer who has learned to trap and care for feral cats and is now training others.  Jen’s lived in Montclair for 18 years and her business is Walk with Dogs.  She does dog pack walks and cat care.  She’s rescued many kittens for CPAW NJ, found fosters, cared for a very sick feral for 4 months to recovery from very serious bite wound, and now is juggling several caregiver locations at a time for trapping.  We are so blessed to have her “spaying it forward” in her own special way.  It takes a village to help outdoor cats live long, healthy lives in our community.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

OREO HAS HER FURREVER HOME!!!  Remember our wonderful Oreo? who was taken off the streets shortly after she lost her friend and dedicated caregiver, Carolyn.  Cared for by Kay Sherwood, a family came to us through Petfinder and PAWS, and now Oreo (now called Honey) is happy and healthy with a wonderful family.  Purrfect ending!

Special Outdoor Cat Highlight:

This cat was the very first one her caregiver ever trapped. Look at her now, the queen of her colony in all her glory! It just goes to show, with love and care (and of course, spay/neuter), Community Cats can live long, healthy lives. If you have an update from your colony, send us a message. We’d love to share! @ Bloomfield, New Jersey.
