A Message from Brian R. Hackett

Below is an important message from Brian R. Hackett, New Jersey State Director, State Affairs from the Humane Society of the United States:

A1365, a bill which would ban cruel wildlife killing contests, is up for a hearing and a vote in Assembly Agriculture Committee THIS Wednesday! The attached is the HSUS FAQ sheet on why these killing contests are so cruel, unnecessary, and ecologically damaging. Check out our undercover investigation including a killing contest in Barnegat, NJ in 2018. Warning, graphic images!

I would request, and greatly appreciate if you could submit your support form by following the instructions below, and submit your testimony/support form. It takes about two minutes—all you need to do is enter your name, title, organization, address, enter the bill number (A1365) and check off the box that says “In favor.” You can leave the “Do you wish to testify” box blank unless you are compelled to provide verbal testimony to the committee. This form indicating your support takes about 90 seconds at most, and will be a great help to show legislators the humane advocacy in favor of the bill. The deadline is tomorrow, Tuesday 1/26 at 3pm. The hearing is virtual through Zoom.

Steps to submit form of support online:

  1. Go to state legislative homepage at www.njleg.state.nj.us
  2. Scroll down to the calendar and click on the # box corresponding to January 27th
  3. The next page will show the listing of committees; scroll down and click on “Assembly Agriculture”
  4. You’ll see “Registration form” on the top of the next page. Click on that to be directed to the form.
  5. Fill it out and check the “In favor” box for bill # A1365. Click submit at the bottom and a confirmation page will pop up.

The state website is very glitchy, so if you have any problems with the link or this process, I am happy to submit the form for you, on your behalf, if you indicate to me that I have permission.

Lastly, if you are represented by one of the Assembly members on the committee (listed below), please directly email and call his/her office and request that he/she vote YES on A1365 on Wednesday in the committee. You can include the attached FAQ sheet if you like. If you know any organizations or advocates in any of those senator’s districts, please forward this action memo along to them as well!

Assembly Agriculture Committee members

Eric Houghtaling, chairman (district 11-Monmouth)

Adam Taliaferro, vice chair (district 3-Gloucester)

John Armato (district 2-Atlantic)

Lisa Swain (district 38-Bergen)

Ronald Dancer (district 12-Ocean/Burlington/Monmouth)

Parker Space (district 24-Sussex)

Best,

Brian R. Hackett
